FACE PERCEPTION RESEARCH STUDY

Participant Information

This research study is interested in finding out how people’s perception of male faces is affected by changes in the features of the faces. The study has ethics approval from City University, London and the NHS Research Ethics Committee (COREC).  The study can be completed online by following the ‘Yes’ link at the bottom of this page if you agree to the informed consent statement.

Please note that the experiments will run on any PC but are not currently compatible with Mac.

What do I have to do? As a consenting participant you will be asked first to give some basic information about yourself and then go on to complete a series of experiments.  Each experiment will present computer-simulated images of male faces and record your responses to them (ratings and/or reaction times).

How long will it take? Each experiment will normally take about 1-3 minutes to complete and the whole set about 8-10 minutes.

Will I get feedback? You will get some feedback at the end of the experiments regarding your responses.  You can also receive a summary of the overall findings when the research is completed, if you include an email address in the space provided at the end of the experiments.  The findings will also be posted on this website.

Is it confidential? All information gathered will be treated confidentially and stored securely- it is kept in a protected database and identified only by subject number to keep it anonymous.

What if I don’t want to answer a question? If you were uncomfortable answering any of the questions you can choose not to.

What if I change my mind about taking part? If you wished to withdraw your consent or exit the program you can at any time.

What happens to my data? The information and data collected will be used for research purposes only and only staff involved in the research project will have access to the data.

Will I recognise people in the images? All images in the experiments are computer simulated and any potential resemblance to actual persons is coincidental and unintended.

If you require any more information before deciding to consent (or not), please contact the principal researcher via gfrize@nhs.net.  Please include your phone number if you wish to be called back instead of emailed.
